Iowa City was selected over six other cities partly due to the region's strong history of supporting wrestling. The University of Iowa routinely leads the nation in attendance figures and has won an unprecedented 23 NCAA titles. This will be the second time Iowa City has hosted the U.S. Olympic Trials in Wrestling, last hosting the event in ahead of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

Ahead of the Olympic trials, the University of Iowa is completing a $47 million renovation to Carver-Hawkeye Arena including construction of new practice, fitness and weight-training facilities for the athletes; renovation of concession stands and restroom facilities; and the construction of new and expanded hospitality and meeting facilities with premium seating options available.
